What is Glenferr FCM?
Glenferr FCM is an injection containing ferric carboxymaltose. It is used in iron replacement medicine to treat iron deficiency anemia (a condition in which the body is unable to get mineral iron, which is essential to produce hemoglobin) in adults. Iron is needed to produce the red blood cells that carry oxygen. This injectable is advised when your body is unable to successfully treat iron deficiency even after taking iron supplement tablets. Glenferr FCM 500 mg injection works by restoring iron storage in the body which produces more red blood cells, and improves oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
Uses
- Increase iron levels in patients receiving dialysis.
- Improves oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.
How does Glenferr FCM injection work?
The active ingredient in this injection is Ferric carboxymaltose, also known as FCM. It works by increasing the levels of iron in the body. Good level of iron levels are important in order to improve the production of hemoglobin and red blood cells.
- The iron released from the Glenferr fcm injection binds with the transferrin, a protein in the blood that transports iron to the bone marrow.
- Iron is essential for the production of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying part of red blood cells.
- Excess iron is stored in the liver and other tissues as ferritin, ensuring that the body has a reserve of iron for future needs.
Thus this injection is highly helpful for patients who have anemia and low iron.
How to use it?
Glenferr FCM Injection is given as an injection or infusion (saline drip) into a vein by your doctor or nurse. Usually, the IV injection lasts for as long as 1 hour. It may cause a temporary increase in blood pressure, followed by redness, dizziness, and nausea and may disappear within 30 minutes. If you experience any adverse effect inform your doctor immediately.
How to store
- Store it in a cool and dry place.
- Keep it away from direct heat and sunlight.
Side effects
The most common side effects include vomiting, headache, dizziness, high blood pressure, and pain or irritation at the site of injection.
