What does Luprodex 3M injection do?

Luprodex 3M Injection reduces the number of sex hormones (testosterone in men and estrogen in women). Decreasing the testosterone levels in the blood levels in males. The injection acts by shutting off hormones made by the ovaries (female reproductive organs), so the estrogen (one of the hormones that causes females to have periods) level is lowered. Also used in the treatment of central precocious puberty, in which a child’s body begins to change into an adult too soon, caused by a release of certain hormones.

How It Works

  1. Leuprolide initially stimulates GnRH receptors, causing a short-term hormone surge
  2. With continued use, it desensitizes these receptors
  3. This leads to a drop in LH and FSH levels
  4. As a result, it lowers estrogen in women and testosterone in men
  5. This hormonal suppression helps manage conditions that depend on these hormones.
  6. Leading to a decrease in cancer cell growth when treating male patients and decreasing the growth rate in kids.

Use of Luprodex 3M injection in paediatrics?

Leuprolide acetate is primarily used in children to treat:

  • It treats a rare condition where puberty starts too early (before age 8 in girls, 9 in boys).
  • It helps in slowing down early sexual development by suppressing the pituitary gland’s release of LH and FSH hormones.
  • This helps delay physical signs of puberty, allowing more time for normal growth and development.

It’s usually given as a monthly or 3-monthly injection and is discontinued once the child reaches an appropriate age for puberty to proceed naturally
