What is Prevenar 20 vaccine?

Prevenar 20 is a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (20 valent) that is a recommended dose for kids age 6 weeks to adults for immunisation against 20 strains of pneumonia bacteria. This vaccine is prescribed to infants and young children to keep them safe from pneumonia infection. The conjugate version of the pneumococcal vaccine enhances the immune response and prevents infection caused by such bacterial infection. This vaccine is sometimes given as a precautionary dosage to patients aged more than 65 who are at high risk and have severe medical conditions.

How Prevenar 20 Vaccine Works

• Contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 20 types of pneumococcal bacteria, each linked to a carrier protein (CRM197) making it a conjugate vaccine.
• Streptococcus pneumoniae strains (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 8, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, and 33F)
• The body recognizes these strains as threats and produces antibodies.
• These antibodies help the immune system recognize and fight real infections later.
• As a conjugate vaccine, it gives stronger and longer-lasting protection, especially in babies and the old people.

Side effects

Some of the side effects include swelling and pain at the injection site. Sometimes patients may get a mild fever and irritation at the injection site.
