Prevenar 13 is a pneumococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine that is prescribed for immunisation against 13 strains of pneumonia bacteria. This vaccine is prescribed especially to infants and young children to safeguard them against infections such as pneumonia and meningitis. The conjugate version of the pneumococcal vaccine enhances the immune response and prevents infection caused by such bacterial infection. This vaccine is sometimes given as a precautionary dosage to patients aged more than 65 who are at high risk and have severe medical conditions.

Uses of Prevenar 13

Prevents pneumococcal infections, including:

  • Pneumonia
  • Meningitis
  • Sepsis
  • Sinus and ear infections

Recommended for:

  • Infants and young children (starting at 6 weeks of age)
  • Adults over 50 years
  • People with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses (chronic kidney disease), or splenectomy

How Prevenar 13 Works

  • Contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 13 types of pneumococcal bacteria, each linked to a carrier protein (CRM197).
  • The body recognizes these components as threats and produces antibodies.

  • As a conjugate vaccine, it gives stronger and longer-lasting protection, especially in babies and the elderly.
