How does bevacizumab work?

Tumors need blood to grow. They send out a signal that tells the body to build new blood vessels toward them. This signal is a protein called Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor.

Bevacizumab blocks Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor protein. When the signal is blocked, new blood vessels do not form. The tumor gets less blood. This slows down its growth and shrinks the size of it.
